Reviving Legumes in Moldovan Rotations: The Agronomic, Environmental and Economic Case

A policy brief documenting the dramatic decline of pulse production in Moldova — from ~73,000 ha in 1990 to ~36,000 ha in 2023 — against a backdrop of severe soil degradation (30% of agricultural land affected) and growing import dependency. Drawing on VALERECO project evidence, it makes the agronomic, environmental and economic case for reintroducing legumes into Moldovan crop rotations, and proposes five targeted policy measures to revive the sector and align with EU DCFTA standards.
